About Albuquerque
Albuquerque is New Mexico's largest city and, some say, the gateway to central and northern New Mexico. Some of the city's attractions are historic Old Town, Petroglyph National Monument, Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway (the world's longest single-span tramway), New Mexico Museum of Natural History and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. For 10 days each October the Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the largest ballooning event in the world, fills the sky with hundreds of hot air balloons.

What kind of city is Albuquerque? It might be
interesting to see what others have said.
"The most beautiful sunsets you can imagine!"
"I came on vacation and knew I had to come back
to live!"
"I can see forever from almost anywhere in town!"
"Surrounded by natural beauty."
What draws such responses from people?
Perhaps it's because Albuquerque is a city of
contrasts. A city where 200 year old adobe homes
reside naturally along side contemporary homes.
Maybe it's because you can hit the the ski slopes
in the morning and tee off in the afternoon! Maybe
it's because in no other city of it's size can you find
more variety, activities, culture or economic
growth.
The Albuquerque of today is the result of three
diverse cultures coexisting together: Native
American, Hispanic and Anglo. It was in 1706 that
twelve Spanish families established a community
by order of the colonial governor Don Francisco
Cuervo y Valdes. That early community was
named San Felipe de Alburquerque in honor of
King Philip V and the Duke of Alburquerque. This
historic background has been preserved in
Albuquerque's "Old Town". Because it was named
to honor the Duke of Alburquerque, it has been
nicknamed the "Duke City". The first "r" has also
been dropped from the city's current spelling.
Long before the Spanish arrived there were the
Pueblo Indians. Their rich and flavorful culture has
influenced the art, music and cuisine of the area
for hundreds of years.
The coming of the railroad in the 1880's
transformed Albuquerque from a slow paced town
into a bustling city full of trade and traffic. And with
the advent of the automobile and Route 66,
Albuquerque saw another economic spurt.
During World War II, America's military and
nuclear development became an important factor
in the growth of the city. Kirtland Air Force Base
was opened to protect and defend Sandia National
Laboratories. During early years, the mission of
Sandia Laboratories was to develop nuclear
weaponry. Today, Sandia Laboratories
participates in research and development of many
projects which have significantly affected private
industry worldwide.
From twelve families to more than a half million,
Albuquerque has become New Mexico's
crossroads for technology, trade, transportation
and tourism. We have not forgotten our roots, and
we look forward with anticipation to the times
ahead.
What kind of city is Albuquerque?
It's the kind of community that, once you've been
here, you'll never want to leave!
